Joyful Christmas music to delight every member of the family will be presented by the St. Augustine Community Orchestra at its Christmas concert Friday Dec. 9, 2011 at 8 pm in the elegant antique courtyard of the Lightner Museum, 25 Granada St. St. Augustine. An encore matinee performance is also scheduled on Sunday Dec. 11 at 3 pm at the Ponte Vedra United Methodist Church, 76 South Roscoe Blvd. in Ponte Vedra Beach.
The music will include all-time favorites such as Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride”, selections from Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Ballet Suite”, and an audience sing-along of traditional carols, including a ‘Feliz Navidad’ of “Salsa Carols” from the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. Admission is $10 at the door; children 12 years of age and under are admitted free.
The 65-member Concert Chorus from St. Augustine High School, singing ‘a cappella’ under the direction of Jeff Dodd, will present a group of Yuletide favorites including a special arrangement of “Carol of the Bells” (an original Russian song by Mikola Leontovich, translated into English by Peter Wilhousky). And, providing a joyful conclusion to the program, the chorus and orchestra together will present George Frederich Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus”.
The orchestra, directed by William McNeiland, is celebrating its 50th anniversary year having presented concerts for St. Augustine and surrounding area residents every season since 1961.
