The St. Augustine Orchestra’s Spring Concert, under the direction of Conductor William McNeiland, will feature a festive program of Latin music as part of the Romanza Festivale of the Arts.
The orchestra will perform the music of Spain, Mexico, Cuba, and Argentina; including the España Rhapsody by the French composer Emmanual Chabrier and Capriccio Espagnol by the Russian composer Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The ballet suite Estancia by Alberto Ginastera, along with Danza del Trigo (Wheat Dance) and the Danza Final (Malambo) originate from Argentina.
David de la Mora, formerly of the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba and violist with the St. Augustine Orchestra, will conduct the Andalucia Suite. This piece, by Cuban-born composer Ernesto Lecuona, includes the familiar song Malagueña.
The orchestra’s March event Gala Trio celebrated the City of St. Augustine’s 450th Anniversary and the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. This occasion included a chance drawing for the winner to conduct the orchestra. This “priceless” opportunity was awarded to Paul Williamson, the St. Augustine Director of Public Affairs. Our guest conductor, “Maestro” Williamson will perform España Cañi.
A surprise mariachi group “Los Muchachos de San Juan” will make its premiere appearance, playing popular Mexican songs Cielito Lindo and Alla en el Rancho Grande.
There are two chances to see this final concert of the season. The first performance will be held in the beautiful gilded age ambiance of The Lightner Museum on Friday, May 16th, 8:00 P.M. at 25 Granada Street in St Augustine. An encore performance will be held Sunday afternoon, May18th at 3:00 P.M. at Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Drive in Ponte Vedra Beach. Tickets for both concerts are $15.00 and available online at www.StAugustineOrchestra.org, or available at the door. Tickets for Students with ID and children twelve and under are $5.00.
